The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is the major stock exchange in Canada. Prominent corporations such as Nortel, RIM, BCE and JDSU are listed in TSX. The TSX provides Canadian stock quotes on trading hours. The other stock exchanges include Canadian Venture Exchange, Vancouver Stock Exchange, Montreal Stock Exchange, and Winnipeg Stock Exchange. There are around 2300 companies listed in Canadian stock exchange. All these exchanges provide Canadian stock quotes. The Canadian stock quotes are widely watched not only in Canada, but also globally.
According to a recent report Montreal Exchange (MX) and TSX Group Inc had decided to merge into a single entity. After merging this group came to be known as TMS Group Inc. The Winnipeg Stock Exchange (WSE) merged with Canadian Venture Exchange 2000. Montreal stock exchange established in 1863 to trade few bonds and stocks, and 1874 saw a new opening for MSE as the Quebec government gave a charter and Canada’s stock exchange legitimately commenced its functions.
TSE was established in 1852 when Toronto business sectors met at regular intervals with the opinion of forming a brokers association. However, in 1861, the Toronto business group got a resolution cleared to establish the Toronto stock exchange with an aim of establishing communication among the members. This was done with a motive to exchange stocks, bonds, shares, mortgages and many other loans. The TSE adopted modern technologies and solutions.
The TSE was the initial exchange to bring forth an atomized system in trade during the 1970s. In 1997 the trading floor of the TSE stopped its trading activities as they were installing electronic trading. 1999 brought tremendous changes such as competing with foreign exchanges. This change gave an opportunity to acquire the preferred stocks and in 2000, TSE became TSX and incorporated as corporation issuing its own stocks. In 2003 there were about 1400 stocks listed in TSX and it became one of the premier stock exchanges of Canada. TSX accounts for around 75% of stocks traded in Canadian stock exchanges. Canadian stock quotes are widely used by brokers and investing community.
